Across Australia, and internationally, there is growing concern about the diminishing place of play in early childhood education and care. And yet, the research remains clear.
Play is not a luxury. It is not a reward. It is not time “off task.”
Play is how children integrate sensory information. It is how executive functioning develops. It is how social understanding, language, emotional regulation and flexible thinking are built.
When we understand play through a developmental lens (neuroscience, occupational therapy and pedagogy) we see that play is foundational to participation, inclusion and long-term learning outcomes.
Because when we protect play, we protect childhood.
